CBIC Warns Against Fake Summons for GST Violations

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a cautionary advisory regarding the issuance of fake and fraudulent summons for GST violations. It has been observed that some individuals with fraudulent intent are creating and sending fake summons to taxpayers, whether or not they are under investigation by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI).

  2. Identifying Fake Summons:

    • Fake summons closely resemble genuine ones due to the use of the Department’s logo and Document Identification Number (DIN). However, these DIN numbers are fake and are used by fraudsters to make the document appear genuine.
  3. Reporting Suspicious Communications:

    • If taxpayers suspect that a summons, letter, or notice is fake, they should immediately report it to the concerned DGGI or CGST formations. This will enable the competent authorities to take law enforcement action against the fraudsters.
  4. Circular on DIN:

    • CBIC has issued Circular No. 122/41/2019-GST dated November 5th, 2019, regarding the generation and quoting of DIN on communications sent by all CBIC officers.
