GST Registration Updates 2026: 3 New REG-01 Enhancements from September
GSTN has introduced three practical improvements in FORM GST REG-01 to make the GST registration journey easier to understand and reduce repetitive data entry. All three functionalities are live on the GST Portal from 1 September 2026.
The changes cover contextual guidance inside REG-01, auto-population of eligible registration details from an existing active GSTIN under the same PAN, and geo-coordinate based recommendation of State and Centre jurisdiction.
Quick Summary
| New functionality | What it does |
|---|---|
| Contextual Guidance in REG-01 | Provides field-level information and tooltips while completing the form |
| Same-PAN Auto-Population | Reuses eligible registration details from an existing active GSTIN |
| Geo-coordinate Jurisdiction Recommendation | Recommends State and Centre jurisdiction based on the Principal Place of Business |
Table of Contents
1. Contextual Guidance in FORM GST REG-01
GSTN has introduced Contextual Guidance within FORM GST REG-01. Relevant information messages can appear at appropriate fields, and applicants can use tooltips or hover guidance to understand what information is required before proceeding.
For businesses, CAs and tax practitioners, this should reduce the need to repeatedly leave the form and search for separate instructions while completing the application. The guidance is useful, but it should still be read in the context of the applicant’s actual facts and applicable registration requirements.
2. Auto-Population from an Existing GSTIN under the Same PAN
Applicants who already have an active GSTIN under the same PAN can now use eligible existing registration details while applying for another GST registration, whether in the same State or another State, subject to the applicable registration requirements.
- In Part-B of REG-01, select “Yes – Auto-Populate Details”.
- The Primary Authorised Signatory (PAS) of the existing GSTIN provides consent through OTP verification.
- After successful verification, eligible registration details are auto-populated.
- The applicant can review the pre-filled information, edit it where required, and continue with the application.
Important: Auto-population reduces repetitive data entry. It does not mean that the new GST registration is automatically approved.
3. Geo-coordinate Based State and Centre Jurisdiction Recommendation
GSTN has also introduced geo-coordinate based jurisdiction assistance in FORM GST REG-01. While entering the Principal Place of Business, the GST Portal uses the business location and its latitude/longitude information to recommend the best-matched State Jurisdiction and Centre Jurisdiction.
The important point is that this is a recommendation, not an automatic final decision. The applicant can review the suggested jurisdiction, keep it where appropriate, or select another available jurisdiction from the dropdown where required.
What Should GST Professionals and Businesses Note?
These enhancements are primarily practical GST Portal improvements. Contextual guidance helps applicants understand individual REG-01 fields, geo-coordinate assistance helps reduce uncertainty while selecting jurisdiction, and same-PAN auto-population can reduce duplicate data entry.
Professionals should still review all system-generated, recommended or pre-filled information before submission. Older screenshots or internal SOPs for REG-01 may also need a quick refresh if they no longer reflect the current portal flow.
